Understand your internet speed test results
Start the Zerolink Internet Speed Test to measure ping, download speed and upload speed. Latency shows response time in milliseconds, while download and upload speeds show data transfer in megabits per second.
For a useful comparison, pause large downloads, disconnect VPN software when appropriate and repeat the test over WiFi and Ethernet. Compare several results at different times instead of judging the connection from one measurement.

What Affects Speed Test Results?
Close bandwidth-heavy apps, press Start Speed Test and keep the tab open while latency, download and upload are measured. Repeat the test under similar conditions to compare results.
The speed you need depends on video quality, the number of simultaneous users and the applications in use. Compare your result with the current requirements published by each service and with the speed included in your internet plan.
Slow speed may be caused by WiFi distance from the router, network congestion, background transfers, a VPN, provider conditions or device limitations. Restart the router, pause transfers and compare WiFi with Ethernet before contacting the provider.
Latency is the measured response time to the selected endpoint in milliseconds. Lower and more consistent latency generally makes calls, games and interactive applications feel more responsive.
The tool transfers test data through M-Lab NDT7 when available and an alternate measurement endpoint when necessary. Results are a snapshot of current conditions, so close bandwidth-heavy applications and repeat the test at different times for a more useful comparison.

Broadband is the connection supplied by your Internet Service Provider. WiFi is the wireless link between your device and router, so distance, walls, interference and device capability can make a WiFi result lower than a wired Ethernet result.
Internet speed varies because of network congestion, WiFi conditions, background activity, server routing and device performance. Test at different times under comparable conditions to understand the pattern.
Streaming requirements vary by provider, resolution, codec and the number of simultaneous streams. Check the current recommendation from the streaming provider and allow additional capacity for other active devices.
Upload performance affects video calls, file transfers, cloud backup and content publishing. The capacity you need depends on application requirements and how many devices upload at the same time.
Greater distance, walls and radio interference can weaken WiFi and reduce measured speed. Compare a test near the router with a wired Ethernet test to identify whether the wireless link is limiting performance.
Yes. On WiFi it measures the connected broadband service; on cellular data it measures the current mobile connection. Mobile results vary with signal strength, location, radio conditions and network congestion.
Restart the router, pause background transfers, test closer to the access point and compare with Ethernet. If repeated wired tests remain below the conditions stated in your plan, ask the provider to check the connection.
