Bits versus bytes

Internet speed is normally advertised in bits per second. File sizes use bytes, with eight bits in every byte.

What is the difference between Mbps and MB/s?

Mbps measures megabits per second, while MB/s measures megabytes per second. Eight bits equal one byte, so 100 Mbps has a theoretical maximum of 12.5 MB/s.

Why can an actual download take longer than the estimate?

Protocol overhead, WiFi quality, server capacity, congestion and other traffic reduce practical transfer speed. The displayed time is an ideal link-rate estimate.

How is monthly internet usage calculated?

The tool estimates daily data from average activity bitrates and hours, then multiplies the daily total by 30. Actual codecs and application behaviour vary.

How much bandwidth headroom should I allow?

The recommendation includes approximately 25 percent headroom over estimated simultaneous demand. More may be appropriate for growing offices or variable CCTV traffic.

Does CCTV use upload or download bandwidth?

Remote viewing and cloud recording primarily consume upload bandwidth at the camera location. Local recording still creates continuous traffic within the local network.
